I see Her everywhere; on moonlit tides
She shines above the waves, divine, serene.
She lays a path of peace, Her love abides,
She calms the surging swells, the oceans’ Queen.
In February of 2011 I drove out to Virginia to spend two days at Virginia Beach and then head down to Fredericksburg to spend time with family. My last night at the beach I looked out of my hotel window and saw a blood red moon sending a rosy reflection onto the sea. I’ve never seen such a thing, having lived my whole life in land-locked Indiana, and the image touched me deeply. The next night as I was driving to Fredericksburg a full moon rose on my left, enormous and radiant. Some people look for the Man in the Moon, but I was immediately aware of the presence of Our Lady in the silver light. I tried to capture both of my experiences in one painting: the full moon rises over the sea, but the image on the water is both the Holy Spirit and Our Lady with outstretched arms.

My name is Kate Duffy Sim. I’m a retired educator, wife and mother, and life-long resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, where I’m a parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. I’m also a devoted follower of Our Lady. She is known by many names: Blessed Mother, Madonna, and the Virgin Mary are only a few. But to me she is first and foremost my Mother. Her love, compassion, and guidance bless my life daily, and all that I have comes through Her grace.
