Our Lady of the Lilies

I see Her everywhere; in lilies bright
With colors from the brush of paradise,
She radiates serene eternal light
And opens heaven’s gate before my eyes.

I painted this picture because I simply love calla lilies. Their architectural structure reminds me of a chapel, which is why I placed a more traditional interpretation of the Holy Mother in the place of the flower’s stamen. In fact, Her image is taken from a small plastic statue I have of Mary inside an arched case with hinged doors. If you know your vintage Catholic artifacts, you can probably picture it! And if you want to read a beautiful piece of micro fiction comparing a church to a calla lily, I highly recommend “Mount Olive” by Monifa A. Love.

About Me

My name is Kate Duffy Sim. I’m a retired educator, wife and mother, and life-long resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, where I’m a parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. I’m also a devoted follower of Our Lady. She is known by many names: Blessed Mother, Madonna, and the Virgin Mary are only a few. But to me she is first and foremost my Mother. Her love, compassion, and guidance bless my life daily, and all that I have comes through Her grace.
