Rose of Eirinn

I see Her everywhere; in roses red
She is the pulse of E’irinn’s ancient art,
A jewel among the leaves of history.
Love blossoms in Her scarlet sacred heart.

When I first began this series I imagined I would paint the Holy Mother only in floral settings. The first was set in sunflowers, and I knew the second would be roses because these are my two favorite flowers. But before starting this painting, I looked over a set of pictures of the Madonna and Child that had belonged to my mother, and found a reproduction from the Irish Book of Kells that fired my imagination. I really wanted to recapture the sense of that ancient work — but how to incorporate a rose? That’s how the rose blossomed into the Sacred Heart. I feel a special personal attachment to this painting because it celebrates my Irish heritage.

About Me

My name is Kate Duffy Sim. I’m a retired educator, wife and mother, and life-long resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, where I’m a parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. I’m also a devoted follower of Our Lady. She is known by many names: Blessed Mother, Madonna, and the Virgin Mary are only a few. But to me she is first and foremost my Mother. Her love, compassion, and guidance bless my life daily, and all that I have comes through Her grace.
