Passion Tree

I see Her everywhere; in thorny limb

She reaches past the pain to guide and save.

She lifts Her hands, obedient to Him,

And shares His victory beyond the grave.

I painted this picture during Lent. Meditating daily on the Passion of Christ, I found it difficult to put brush to canvas and produce a smiling mother and child. I wanted instead to do honor to the sacrifice made by both Jesus and Mary, for how can any mother watch her child suffer and not feel the same pain? I chose the thorn tree to represent the physical impact of both the cross and the crown of thorns. Mary’s hands project from either side, palms up, to show acceptance, praise, and blessing. They are larger in scale than the tree to indicate Her power and triumph over death. The colors are somber, but a rosy aura behind the tree suggests the continuation of Mary’s presence.

About Me

My name is Kate Duffy Sim. I’m a retired educator, wife and mother, and life-long resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, where I’m a parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. I’m also a devoted follower of Our Lady. She is known by many names: Blessed Mother, Madonna, and the Virgin Mary are only a few. But to me she is first and foremost my Mother. Her love, compassion, and guidance bless my life daily, and all that I have comes through Her grace.
