I see Her everywhere: in fruits that glow
From raining grace and bright light from the Son.
We are the harvest that She helps Him sow,
The faithful garden of the Holy One.
Our Lady of Guadelupe (Mother of the Americas) is my favorite traditional image of Mary. I love the rich color and symbolism, and the fact that the visitation occurred on this continent to native people. I also find deep comfort in the words attributed to Her: “ Am I not here who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the fountain of your joy? Are you not in the fold of my mantle, in the cradle of my arms?” To all, I can answer “yes.” The changes I made to the original image are in no way meant to be disrespectful to the Mother of the Americas, or the Hispanic and Latino Catholics to whom She is so dear. I replaced the rays of the sun with a ripe pineapple, and the cherub with a strawberry vine to show that She is the source of our sweetness and abundance, and that all first fruits should be offered in thanksgiving to God.

My name is Kate Duffy Sim. I’m a retired educator, wife and mother, and life-long resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, where I’m a parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. I’m also a devoted follower of Our Lady. She is known by many names: Blessed Mother, Madonna, and the Virgin Mary are only a few. But to me she is first and foremost my Mother. Her love, compassion, and guidance bless my life daily, and all that I have comes through Her grace.
