I see Her everywhere; the sun ignites
And spreads its petals open to Her grace.
Leaves unfurl as robes of sacred rites,
She smiles in wonder at His holy face.
This was the first painting in the series that became “I See Her Everywhere.” I hadn’t lifted a paint brush for a few years, and was very tentative in my first effort. The canvas is the smallest of all the paintings (Passion Tree the largest), and I started with a favorite and familiar subject for me, sunflowers. I positioned the flowers around the heads of the Virgin and Child to resemble halos and crowns, but also Aztec feathered head dresses out of respect to the history of Mexico – which I also associate with sunflowers. My intention was to present Mary and Jesus as both child-like and regal.
My name is Kate Duffy Sim. I’m a retired educator, wife and mother, and life-long resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, where I’m a parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. I’m also a devoted follower of Our Lady. She is known by many names: Blessed Mother, Madonna, and the Virgin Mary are only a few. But to me she is first and foremost my Mother. Her love, compassion, and guidance bless my life daily, and all that I have comes through Her grace.
